Catapult & UtilityAR: Augmented Reality for Offshore Renewable Energy
Updated: Sep 2
The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult is the UK's technology innovation and research centre for offshore wind, wave and tidal energy. UtiltiyAR teamed up with Catapult to demonstrate how their technology can improve the efficiency of Operations and Maintenance tasks offshore.
Offshore wind projects are becoming increasingly more complex, and experienced staff are in short supply. Digitalisation is transforming the way wind farm projects are operated and maintained. Augmented Reality is now a realistic prospect to help improve the efficiency of O&M tasks. UtilityAR's Augmented Reality Smart Glasses provide a new solution helping technicians through interactive visualisations of information and instructions.
UtilityAR's Augmented Reality (AR) Smart Glasses are a new platform that present exciting opportunities to provide workers with the information they need to get their job done and to link them with specialist staff and advice when needed. AR smart glasses can project information onto the inside of the lens of the glass to allow the wearer to see it while still seeing the real world and being hands-free. The technician can see step by step instructions on how to complete a task while being at the asset.
They have forward-facing cameras to allow them to understand what the wearer is looking at and so make the information being shown contextually appropriate. The cameras also allow remote adviser functionality whereby live video and sound can be transmitted to an offsite specialist. The glasses allow the off-site advisor to see exactly what the on-site technician sees in real-time.
UtilityAR is focused on providing organisations with end to end solutions in this space. Our solutions include hardware review and procurement, software development and provision, systems integration, training, support and monitoring of results.
